Pocono Township Volunteer Fire Company
Pocono Township Volunteer Fire Company was formed in 1940 by a group of concerned citizens, and received its charter in 1940. The first purchase of motorized equipment was a 1927 Dodge Brothers Truck, and is still operable today, being used for parades. The stone firehouse building was built in 1948. Renovations were made in 1956, and an addition was constructed in 1976. In the fall of 2002, a new seven-bay station was built behind the old station next to the municipal building. This gave the fire company much needed extra space for the trucks and equipment. The old station will continue to be used for the chartered Cub Scouts in Pack 85, Boy Scouts in Troop 85 and hall rentals.
The Pocono Township Volunteer Fire Company has over 65 active volunteers. The members of the fire company donate many hours of their time responding to calls, training, fundraising, community day, etc. The fire company also raises money to purchase equipment and to maintain the fire house through various means such as the annual carnival, the fundraising letter, the fireworks display, hall rentals, golf tournaments, raffles and other donations. Volunteers are always needed for all the activities. You can stop by any Wednesday night at 7:00PM or call 570-629-0930 to find out what we are all about. The fire company also has a junior division for people who are 16 and 17 years of age who learn about fire rescue and help out with the fundraising.
In 2004 the Pocono Township Volunteer Fire Company responded to 599 emergency calls. The fire company continues to grow each year in call volume. The fire company responded to 15 calls in 1941, 22 in 1950 and 21 in 1960, 30 in 1970, 153 in 1980, 203 in 1990, 398 in 2000 and 402 in 2001. All of our dedicated members volunteer their time freely to help their community. Remember, members are not paid!
