The HJP Park and Open Space Commission (HJPPOSC) has been in operation for
two years and has lots to show for it!. The Commission is made up of
representatives of Hamilton, Jackson and Pocono Townships and the
Stroudsburg Area and Pocono Mountain School District. Spotts/Stevens/McCoy
is a planning firm hired by the Commission to prepare a master site plan for
the regional park. The planners have prepared a plan for this 146 acre
wooded property that proposes paved and unpaved trails, equestrian trails, 2
baseball/softball and 3 soccer fields, basketball, 2 volleyball and 4 tennis
courts, pavilions, picnic areas, a recreation center building and an
amphitheater. The plan is being finalized and engineering for the projects
will begin this spring.
The HJPPOSC has received three grants from the PA Department of Conservation
and Natural Resources for master planning and construction at the Regional
Park. The latest two grants equal $235,000 to be used toward construction of
the driveway entrance, paved trail and parking at the center of the site. It
is anticipated that construction can begin in the spring of 2009. The
Commission also plans to hire a full time park director in the late fall to
help with implementing the work of the Commission and its municipalities.
The director will assist the Commission with implementing their Open Space
and Recreation Plan and development of the new park. The director will also
assist the townships in park projects at their existing parks and
recreational programming. Keep checking on our website for news updates!
